Import your server from another host
Bringing a server over from somewhere else? The Import tab, right above Settings, pulls it in for you - no more copying files across by hand.
Before you start
- Have your source ready: another Volantis server you own, your old host's SFTP/FTP details, a direct download link, or a
.zip/.tar.gzyou've exported. - Check your disk allowance is big enough first. Import checks the size upfront and refuses with the real numbers if it won't fit, rather than starting and running out of room partway through.
Pick a source
- Another of my servers - clones a backup snapshot from a server you already own on Volantis.
- SFTP/FTP from your old host - connect with a host, port, username and password. Choose SFTP, FTP or FTPS, and leave the path blank to have us find your server folder automatically.
- A download URL - a direct link to a
.zipor.tar.gz. - Upload an archive - a
.zipor.tar.gzfrom your own computer.
FTPS needs a real certificate. If your old host is only serving a self-signed one, the connection is refused. Use SFTP or plain FTP instead if that's all it has.
Review before anything changes
Once the source is scanned, you land on a review screen before a single file moves:
- What we found - the server type and Minecraft version it detected, plus mod and plugin counts and the total size.
- World folders - which world(s) came with it.
- Server settings - which of the source's settings carry across, and which ones Volantis always sets itself (
server-port,rcon.port,rcon.passwordand a few others). Those stay ours no matter what - importing the old values would break your console and stop players connecting. - Not brought across - old logs, caches, the previous server jar, and launcher scripts like
run.shorstart.batnever come over. They're not needed here and can confuse the install.
Four switches let you choose exactly what to bring in: World, Mods & plugins, Settings, and Server type (switch this server to match what was detected, if it's different).
Cloning from another of your servers does not bring the loader or any mod/plugin jars. A backup snapshot never contains
.jarfiles, so this option brings your world and configuration across, but the server software and every mod or plugin get reinstalled fresh, not copied. If you need the jars themselves, bring the server in over SFTP, a URL or an upload instead.
If this server already has files on it
Anything already here is replaced by what you choose to import, and that can't be undone once it runs. To protect you:
- A safety backup is taken first, before anything is touched. If that backup fails, the import stops and nothing on your server is changed.
- You confirm by typing the server's name exactly, then click Import now.
If it turns out you needed what was there before, restore that safety backup from Back up and restore your world.
Start it
You can only run one import per server at a time. Watch its progress on the same tab, and use Cancel import if you change your mind while it's still running.
After it's done
Start the server and check the Console on first boot. If the wrong type or version was picked up, or you left something out the first time, you can run another import to bring the rest across.
